Fall 2019 - BVCAS participated in the Electric Vehicle Summit organized by our good friends at Bow Valley Climate Action.
As part of that presentation, we provided charts comparing various conventional combustion engine vehicles with hybrid and electric vehicles. It’s quite interesting that the vehicles that can run solely on batteries (e.g. the Volt, Tesla and Leaf) generally only have slightly better carbon emissions than a high efficiency hybrid (e.g. Prius) when using today’s mix of power generation in Alberta. This is because Alberta still uses coal for about 30% of its power generation. By 2030 when coal power is forecasted to be phased out in Alberta, EV’s are a clear winner. Of course, an electric bike, or better yet a regular bike is a lot better yet! And a lot cheaper on your wallet!
March 2012 - BVCAS supports Banff’s Collegiate High School Green Team Wind Turbine project
Students at Banff collegiate High School are working with a teacher to install a wind turbine on the roof of the school. The students have received approval from the Town of Banff and this will set a precedent for the community at large. They will monitor the turbine as to its efficiency and effectiveness in reducing dependence on present energy sources (hydro, coal, oil)
BVCAS, in support of their initiative, presented them with a cheque for $500.00 to help them get the project off and running. The students will inform BVCAS of the results of this project.
